Done with my reading of '
Day of the Dragon' and '
Lord of the Clans' its amazing to me how good both books are and how well they both hold up. Despite recons and what some characters might or might not have done later. There is a quality here that I think most people can enjoy. About to give '
The Last Guardian' Another go as part of first batch of reviews. I honestly didn't like the book on my first reading not sure if that was because I knew so little about
Khadgar at the time of my first reading or I expected the book to be more about
Medivh than it was. We shall see.
On another issue I would like to speak out about is. The wolf cry that has become Mary Sue. It seem that ANY character in Warcraft is now a Mary sue. I was listening to the Counsel of Six over the weekend. And there was talk about the new short story about Garrosh.
Heart of War written my Sarah Pine winner of the 2009 Blizzard writing contest. I for one think is great Blizzard is giving these people a chance to get there names and writing out there. I don't know if they were paid or not. I would hope so but even if they were not I'm sure Miss Pine was happy to write the story.
The issue the podcast was upset about is giving these writer a free reign would create more Mary Sues. That write and office blizzard short story in now must fan fic. Whats more so are the Comics and 'Manga'. Its one thing to take issue with one character that a author Blizzard has used for 6 of the 15 book out since 2001. But going to the point of calling almost all published materials Mary Sue is just silly to the highest order.
If someone whats to have a personal Canon that doesn't involved a large number of the characters that is one thing but to say that they are
"fictional character with overly idealized and hackneyed mannerisms, lacking noteworthy flaws, and primarily functioning as a wish-fulfillment fantasy for the author or reader." Doesn't even make sense anymore. My sense is people cry Mary Sue not because they see the author in the writing but because they don't like the writing and thus wish it put down without having to go into detail what they don't like.
